Kasipul MP Charles Were shot dead in Nairobi

Witnesses say the MP was attacked by two assailants riding a motorbike. One of the gunmen reportedly disembarked and shot the MP at close range at around 7:30 pm.
Kasipul MP Charles Were was shot dead on Wednesday evening near the City Mortuary roundabout in Nairobi, police sources say.
According to multiple witnesses, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MP was attacked by two assailants riding a motorbike. One of the gunmen reportedly disembarked and shot the MP at close range at around 7:30 pm.

Witnesses said the attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

However, the MP’s driver, who was in the vehicle during the attack, survived the ordeal.
Were, who was rushed to a nearby hospital was pronounced dead on arrival.
The motive behind the killing remains unknown.

Were was elected to represent Kasipul in the National Assembly on an ODM ticket during the 2022 General Election. He was a member of the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy and Irrigation.
Prior to joining politics, he served in the private sector, including as Chief Executive Officer of Victoria Cleaning Services. He held a Bachelor’s and a Diploma in Business Management from Mt. Kenya University.
